Why Your Jaw Pain Isn’t Just About Your Jaw — And What to Do About It
I often hear, “My jaw hurts,” and most people assume it’s only a TMJ issue. But I’ve learned through treating countless clients that jaw pain is often part of a bigger picture—neck muscle tension, posture habits, and daily stress all play a role. Today, I’ll share why your jaw discomfort might signal deeper structural issues and the steps I use to help you find lasting relief.
Understanding the Chain Reaction
Your jaw sits at the crossroads of facial muscles and the cervical spine. When one area tightens—whether from nighttime clenching, slouched posture at your desk, or uneven chewing—the tension travels:
Muscles I Check: Temporalis, masseter, sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezius
Common Triggers: Grinding teeth, forward-head position, favoring one side when you chew
This chain reaction can lead to headaches, limited mouth opening, ear symptoms, and that familiar aching.

Three Steps I Use to Break the Pain Cycle
Self-Release Techniques
Jaw Fascia Glide: Warm a cloth, place it at your jaw hinge, then gently circle your fingers for 2 minutes on each side.
Neck Tilt Stretch: Tilt your ear toward your shoulder, hold for 20 seconds, then switch. Repeat twice daily.
Posture Reset
Stand against a wall: ears, shoulders, hips touching. Feel that straight line.
Every hour, stand up, pinch shoulder blades together, hold for 10 seconds.
Bite Awareness
Keep a “resting gap”: teeth lightly apart (about paper-thickness) during the day.
If you clench at night, a soft night guard can protect your joints and muscles.
